I’ll see your Paul and raise you ten plus… and a Vulcan just for the fun of it

Oh how interesting it gets whenever we talk about actually obeying YHWH with Christians. It still astounds me that there should even be a debate as to whether or not obeying YHWH is something we should be doing. Yet, time and time again, we find that it is a hotly contested debate. And within this debate, everyone and their dog wants to throw down Paul as if they have a trump card to dismiss anything you might have to say concerning actually obeying {gasp} the commandments that YHWH established for OUR OWN GOOD. [sigh] OK, so I’ll see your Paul and raise you the ten commandments and more…

Definition of “I’ll see you and raise you”

  1. Used to accept a bet, and at the same time raise the stakes. I’ll see your five and raise you ten.
  2. More generally, used when someone produces or reveals something. One says this to announce they will answer by producing or revealing something of their own.

Most who want to dispute the idea of keeping the commandments will quote Scriptures (written by Paul) such as…

Romans 13:

8 Owe no man any thing, but to love one another: for he that loveth another hath fulfilled the law.

9 For this, Thou shalt not commit adultery, Thou shalt not kill, Thou shalt not steal, Thou shalt not bear false witness, Thou shalt not covet; and if there be any other commandment, it is briefly comprehended in this saying, namely, Thou shalt love thy neighbour as thyself.

10 Love worketh no ill to his neighbour: therefore love is the fulfilling of the law.

Galatians 5;14 For all the law is fulfilled in one word, even in this; Thou shalt love thy neighbour as thyself.

This of course is a paraphrase of what Yeshua said (while quoting MOSES):

Matthew 22:

36 Master, which is the great commandment in the law?

37 Jesus said unto him, Thou shalt love the Lord thy God with all thy heart, and with all thy soul, and with all thy mind.

38 This is the first and great commandment.

39 And the second is like unto it, Thou shalt love thy neighbour as thyself.

40 On these two commandments hang all the law and the prophets.

Looking at the above, many will say, “See, now all we have are two commandments and that’s all we have to do!” implying that all of the others are now null and void and that Yeshua just trumped His Father. On the contrary, Yeshua merely boiled down the essence of what ALL His Father’s commandments are ALL about. You see, love is an action verb not just some ambiguous noun we all say we have for YHWH and man. Thus, the commandments of the Law show us how to love YHWH and others. And in return for doing so, YHWH says He will do something too…

Exodus 20:6 And shewing mercy unto thousands of them that LOVE ME, and KEEP MY COMMANDMENTS.

Deuteronomy 5:10 And shewing mercy unto thousands of them that LOVE ME and KEEP MY COMMANDMENTS.

Deuteronomy 7:9 Know therefore that the Lord thy God, he is God, the faithful God, which keepeth covenant and mercy with them that LOVE HIM and KEEP HIS COMMANDMENTS to a thousand generations;

NOTE: YHWH ONLY keeps “covenant and mercy” with those who LOVE Him through obedience to His commandments. See also:

Nehemiah 1:

4 And it came to pass, when I heard these words, that I sat down and wept, and mourned certain days, and fasted, and prayed before the God of heaven,

5 And said, I beseech thee, O Lord God of heaven, the great and terrible God, that keepeth covenant and mercy for them that LOVE HIM and OBSERVE HIS COMMANDMENTS:

Psalm 103:

17 But the mercy of the Lord is from everlasting to everlasting upon them that fear him, and his righteousness unto children’s children;

18 To such as keep his covenant, and to those that remember his commandments to DO them.

We all want to live in the “New Covenant.” Great! But again, we see that YHWH ONLY keeps covenants with those who “love” Him AND KEEP THE COMMANDMENTS! I think John makes this abundantly clear too…

1 John 2:

1 My little children, these things write I unto you, that ye sin {defined as transgression of the Law in 1 John 3:4} not. And if any man sin, we have an advocate with the Father, Jesus Christ the righteous:

2 And he is the propitiation for our sins: and not for ours only, but also for the sins of the whole world.

3 And hereby we do know that we know him, if we KEEP HIS COMMANDMENTS.

He that saith, I know him, and keepeth not his commandments, is a liar, and the truth is not in him.

But whoso keepeth his word, in him verily is the love of God perfected: hereby know we that we are in him.

6 He that saith he abideth in him ought himself also so to walk, even as he walked.

How did Yeshua walk? In PERFECT OBEDIENCE to His Father. By the way, knowing this truth, consider what Paul said:

1 Corinthians 11:1 Imitate me, just as I also imitate Christ.

The ONLY way Paul could make this statement is if he was “walking even as Yeshua walked.” And Paul said to imitate him to the formerly Gentile Corinthians, which means he’s telling them to obey YHWH! John said that in keeping the commandments, the love of God is perfected. Yeshua kept the commandments perfectly and thus demonstrated love better than any other. Paul decided to imitate Him. Will you take Paul’s lead and do the same?

1 John 5:

2 By this we know that we love the children of God, when we love God, and keep his commandments.

3 For this is the love of God, that we keep his commandments: and his commandments are not grievous.

Will you love YHWH and man as Paul did? I only ask this because whenever I post something about the keeping of the Law/commandments, many want to quote Paul, while actually arguing against what Paul wrote and stood for all through his ministry and epistles [see: Paul Taught Against Transgression of the Law – aka “sin.”]. It is so easy to see that Paul is against sin. But sin is transgression of the Law (1 John 3;4). So, how can you use Paul to argue against the keeping of the commandments, when Paul himself is against the transgression of them??

Deuteronomy 11:1 Therefore thou shalt LOVE THE LORD THY GOD, and KEEP his charge, and his statutes, and his judgments, and his commandments, alway.

Deuteronomy 11:22 For if ye shall diligently KEEP ALL THESE COMMANDMENTS which I command you, to DO them, {WHY?} to love the Lord your God, to walk in all his ways, and to cleave unto him;

Deuteronomy 19:9 If thou shalt keep all these commandments to DO THEM, which I command thee this day, {WHY?} to LOVE the Lord thy God, and to walk ever in his ways; then shalt thou add three cities more for thee, beside these three:

Deuteronomy 30:16 In that I command thee this day to LOVE THE LORD THY GOD, to walk in his ways, and to KEEP HIS COMMANDMENTS and his statutes and his judgments, that thou mayest live and multiply: and the Lord thy God shall bless thee in the land whither thou goest to possess it.

Joshua 22:5 But take diligent heed to do the commandment and the law, which Moses the servant of the Lord charged you, {WHY?} to LOVE THE LORD YOUR GOD, and to walk in all his ways, and to KEEP HIS COMMANDMENTS, and to cleave unto him, and to serve him with all your heart and with all your soul.

That sounds familiar doesn’t it? What did Yeshua say?

Mark 12:30 And thou shalt love the Lord thy God with all thy heart, and with all thy soul, and with all thy mind, and with all thy strength: this is the first commandment.

How is such “love” demonstrated? Are you still not seeing a blatantly obvious pattern manifesting ALL OVER the Scriptures?? How much clearer does YHWH have to be?

In closing, why does YHWH want us to love (action verb) others and Him through the ACTION of KEEPING HIS COMMANDMENTS?

Deuteronomy 5:29 O that there were such an heart in them, that they would fear me, and keep all my commandments always, THAT IT MIGHT BE WELL WITH THEM, and with their children for ever!

Deuteronomy 6:

1 Now these are the commandments, the statutes, and the judgments, which the Lord your God commanded to teach you, that ye might do them in the land whither ye go to possess it:

2 That thou mightest fear the Lord thy God, to keep all his statutes and his commandments, which I command thee, thou, and thy son, and thy son’s son, all the days of thy life; and that thy days may be prolonged.

3 Hear therefore, O Israel, and observe to do it; that it may be well with thee, and that ye may increase mightily, as the Lord God of thy fathers hath promised thee, in the land that floweth with milk and honey.

4 Hear, O Israel: The Lord our God is one Lord:

5 And thou shalt love the Lord thy God with all thine heart, and with all thy soul, and with all thy might.

6 And these words, which I command thee this day, shall be in thine heart:

7 And thou shalt teach them diligently unto thy children, and shalt talk of them when thou sittest in thine house, and when thou walkest by the way, and when thou liest down, and when thou risest up.

Deuteronomy 30:16 In that I command thee this day to LOVE THE LORD THY GOD, to walk in his ways, and to KEEP HIS COMMANDMENTS and his statutes and his judgmentsthat thou mayest live and multiply: and the Lord thy God shall bless thee in the land whither thou goest to possess it.

Proverbs 7:

1 My son, keep my words, and lay up my commandments with thee. 2 KEEP MY COMMANDMENTSand live; and my law as the apple of thine eye.

1 Kings 2:3 And keep the charge of the Lord thy God, to walk in his ways, to KEEP his statutes, and his commandments, and his judgments, and his testimonies, as it is written in the law of Moses, that thou mayest PROSPER IN ALL that thou doest, and whithersoever thou turnest thyself:

1 Kings 3:14 And if thou wilt walk in my ways, to keep my statutes and my commandments, as thy father David did walk, then I will lengthen thy days.

Nehemiah 1:

8 Remember, I beseech thee, the word that thou commandedst thy servant Moses, saying, If ye transgress, I will scatter you abroad among the nations:

9 But if ye turn unto me, and KEEP MY COMMANDMENTS, and DO them; though there were of you cast out unto the uttermost part of the heaven, yet will I gather them from thence, and will bring them unto the place that I have chosen to set my name there.

Obedience to YHWH’s commandments is NOT a root of your salvation. It should however certainly be a fruit of it. And the benefits of this spiritual fruit are far better than the health benefits of physical fruit! So, “love YHWH” by keeping His commandments, and “Live long and prosper and be blessed in all that you do.”
